December 28, 2007
Chinese communications equipment provider Huawei has made gains in Russia's 3G telecom market. According to a Reuters report, Russia's second-largest mobile operator Vimpelcom has selected Huawei and Ericsson as the suppliers of network equipment and services for Vimpelcom's 3G network. However, details regarding the value of the deal and the specific regions where Huawei and Ericsson respectively will supply equipment are not yet available. The locales are expected to be decided by year-end 2007.

Meanwhile, Russia's third-largest mobile operator MegaFon has chosen Huawei to construct its 3G network in Siberia and the Far East region. Huawei will be responsible for the delivery of base station controllers and subsystems, equipment installation and maintenance, as well as personnel training.

The value of MegaFon's entire 3G network construction project is estimated to reach up to US$280 million. Nokia Siemens Networks will be responsible for the parts in Russia's European territory and the Volga-Urals region.
